A comparison of two techniques to discriminate continental origin of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) off West Greenland ArchiMer
Reddin, David; De Pontual, Helene; Prouzet, Patrick.
Two techniques of stock discrimination both utilizing scales, i. e. termed as classical technique and shape analysis, are compared for discriminating between North American and European Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) caught off West Greenland. Three scales from each of 60 salmon were analyzed: 30 from North American and 30 from European-origin salmon collected from home rivers in 1982. The best results indicated misclassification and error rates of 0% for shape analysis and 5.0% and ± 1.7%, respectively, for the classical technique. A nested ANOVA indicated that variation was greater between scales of salmon of North American and European origin than from several scales from the same salmon. It was concluded that shape analysis with computer-aided...

An Extension of the Blinder-Oaxaca Decomposition Technique to Logit and Probit Models AgEcon
Fairlie, Robert W..
The Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition technique is widely used to identify and quantify the separate contributions of group differences in measurable characteristics, such as education, experience, marital status, and geographical differences to racial and gender gaps in outcomes. The technique cannot be used directly, however, if the outcome is binary and the coefficients are from a logit or probit model. I describe a relatively simple method of performing a decomposition that uses estimates from a logit or probit model. Expanding on the original application of the technique in Fairlie (1999), I provide a more thorough discussion of how to apply the technique, an analysis of the sensitivity of the decomposition estimates to different parameters, and the...

Assessment from space of mangroves evolution in the Mekong Delta, in relation to extensive shrimp farming ArchiMer
Tong, P. H. S; Auda, Y; Populus, Jacques; Aizpuru, M; Al Habshi, A. Al; Blasco, F.
This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. Four Systeme Probatoire de l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) scenes were used for the discrimination of mangrove types and for the delineation of landscape units. For the first time, five...

Identification of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains for alcoholic fermentation by discriminant factorial analysis on electronic nose signals Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Calderon-Santoyo,Montserrat; Chalier,Pascale; Chevalier-Lucia,Dominique; Ghommidh,Charles; Ragazzo-Sanchez,Juan Arturo.
An electronic nose (E-nose) coupled to gas chromatography was tested to monitor alcoholic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae ICV-K1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae T306, two strains well-known for their use in oenology. The biomass and ethanol concentrations and conductance changes were measured during cultivations and allowed to observe the standard growth phases for both yeast strains. The two strains were characterized by a very similar tendency in biomass or ethanol production during the fermentation. E-nose was able to establish a kinetic of the production of aroma compounds production and which was then easy to associate with the fermentation phases. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that the data collected by E-nose during the...

Potential of F-specific RNA bacteriophages to discriminate sources of faecal pollution in French shellfish ArchiMer
Caprais, Marie-paule; Le Mennec, Cecile; Pommepuy, Monique; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Gourmelon, Michele.
In Europe, shellfish harvesting areas are classified according European Directive EC N°854/2004, using classic faecal indicator levels (Escherichia coli). A better indicator is needed, however, because shellfish may contain other human pathogens. Other indicator organisms have therefore been evaluated and, among these, coliphages meet most of the requirements to serve as indicators and models for enteroviruses. In order to evaluate the capacity of coliphages as indicators, a total of 764 shellfish were sampled in 2004 from 70 shellfish harvesting areas monitored by the Ifremer microbiological surveillance network (REMI, http://www.ifremer.fr/envlit/), and tested for F-specific RNA bacteriophages (FRNAPH). Two species of bivalve mollusc were collected...

Understanding the dynamics of δ13C and δ15N in soft tissues of the bivalve Crassostrea gigas facing environmental fluctuations in the context of Dynamic Energy Budgets (DEB) ArchiMer
Emmery, Antoine; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Kooijman, S. A. L. M..
We studied the dynamics of stable isotopes δ13C and δ15N of an opportunistic suspension feeder the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) to better understand the factors that influence the trophic enrichment (trophic-shift, Δ) between primary producers and consumers. Most of the previous studies on this topic do not quantify mass fluxes or isotopic discrimination phenomena in the organism, which are two pillars in isotope ecology. We used a dynamic energy budget (DEB) approach (Kooijman, 2010) to quantify i) the fluxes of elements and isotopes in C. gigas soft tissues and ii) the impact of the scaled feeding level, the organism mass and the isotopic ratio of food on the "trophic-shift" Δ, and isotope turnover in tissues. Calibration and parametrization...
